A place to discuss any and all things Virtual Reality. This isn’t really something that I need though it would be cool, but I was talking to my father whos a pretty big tech nerd but has never tried VR. I’ve personally only tried it once for a few minutes but cant wait to get it someday. Anyways he’s in his mid-70s and while he still gets around now he was talking about his hopes for VR someday. Basically, he was like if he’s still around 10 years from now, even though he’s healthy, it would be incredible to basically travel through VR. Once it’s a lot harder to walk around and take long flights and wait in long lines and everything that comes with traveling, will there essentially be vacations you can take in VR? I assume there is stuff like this now with google street view maybe but even going on my computer looking at street view it isn’t perfect and doesn’t seem THAT amazing. Maybe it’s a lot better in VR. Either way, besides games, and it even doesn’t have to be traveling, what is the future looking like for VR for the elderly? I know my grandmother in the last years of her life at 96 when she was stuck in a bed 24 hours a day in a nursing home would have loved to have been able to walk through her old neighborhood, or through the streets of Italy, but beyond that even I’m curious about what other types of VR programs could be useful without standing and walking around. Like my father loved video games back in the day up until PlayStation 2 when things got a bit more complex. Mostly because of the controllers and how games went from 2d to 3d and using camera angles. Maybe VR would be easier for him now, as long as he can do it from his recliner. Thanks!

As of 2024 how close are we to full dive vr technology?

As a kid I loved sword art online and always thought full dive vr was amazing so I’m just curious how far away that technology really is and does elon musks nerolink open the doorway to more breakthroughs in this field?

Hi! I’ve been lurking here and doing some outside research. It seems that we will have made loads of progress on a system such as full dive (I havent watched SAO so I dont know the full details of it) by 2030. Something around well working Ready Player One, and making a lot of progress on haptics, etc. By the time I finish univetsity and hopefully a PhD, it will already be ~ 2035 and I worried that the tec will be so advanced that I won’t have time to make meaningful contributions to it. An immersive tech-based alternate reality has been my dream for a long time, and I tecently discovered how people are working towards it (not all directly) and am worried about this. Excited about the tech, but also worried. What are your thoughts on my situation? https://youtube.com/shorts/tsRFNiVMjMg?si=UkRHOPY0uT8tOJfL
